How are we to know what to pay employees?? As I am writing this, a client called with a situation where a potential employee just turned down the job because of money. AHHH!!! Where is the manual on this issue?

Scott helps to cut through the CHAOS of employee compensation, ownership, and the popular but confusing issue of incentive compensation in this episode of the Business ON Purpose Podcast.

NOTE: This episode has been drawn from a recent Webclass that Scott delivered to Small Business Owners by the same title.

Mar 14, 2017

It does not matter where in the world your business is placed, we have observed common challenges in small businesses and organizations throughout the world. Whether it be employee headaches, cash flow challenges, quality problems, or feeling like there's never enough time, the reality is… there is never enough time!

So what is the solution?

After having a lengthy discussion with a local business owner over lunch, Scott realized there are really two primary factors that must be installed before even the most basic business processes. In this episode, Scott will walk methodically through each one of these two items so you can begin implementing right away!

They run a $14M business with very little understanding of their finances, and it has left them in a continual state of anxiety and worry. The CHAOS is paralyzing thoughtful decisions in favor of reactive responses.

The good news is they don't have to continue in that mindset, and yet they keep saying "that won't work here". I finally said, "stop!"

There are so many other options, so many more things that can free them from the anxiety.

Not "get rich quick" schemes.

Not "just sign up here and your life will forever change".

Instead, they could choose a thoughtful perspective and put in the hard work, or just keep doing the same thing that led to the anxious result.

In this episode Scott pushes us to think outside the limits and STOP saying "that won't work here!"

Jared and his wife (aka Superwoman by Jared) are building an incredibly unique family while also bringing that uniqueness to small businesses. Jared talks about the gift of slowing down coming from a fast-paced background of elite sports and faith-based ministry.

As the age of the Millennial came into full speed Jared began receiving questions about these "strange" Millennials, even though he just sees them as people. Jared is know as the Millennial-whisperer as he explains their diversity and uniqueness in their overemphasis of what separates them.

Jared loves the Millennial mind and their values, and helps all of us understand these talented people and how their narrow brilliance is a huge asset to our society. He discusses the right Millennial investments to make in your business. Sinek challenges us to "Start With Why", Jared recommends that we follow that up with "Start With Who".

Revenue is coming in the door, your product and service is being sold. You are wrestling through the reality of running a small business; the employees, the customers, the banks, the accounts payables and receivables, etc.

Outside of a few numbers on a Balance Sheet or a Net Income statement (which usually don't tell you the entire story), you begin to wonder...

"Is my business even healthy?"

Just like your human body, it is a worthy investment of time to sit down and ask yourself some strategic and thoughtful questions determining the health or disease of your business.

In episode 77 Scott will walk you through 9 questions you can ask right now to determine the health of your business. Make sure to go visit MyBusinessOnPurpose.com and download the free "Is My Business Healthy" Quick Assessment.

70% of the American workforce are not engaged in their work (even more globally). Culture exists in every business regardless of whether it is "good" or "bad".

Last week we discussed what it takes to actually build culture based on three primarily elements. This week, Scott reveals the two major things that you can do immediately to begin delegating culture throughout your business or organization.

Feb 7, 2017

You know it when you see it, but how do you actually go about intentionally building "culture" into the fabric of your business (and every other area of your life)?

We explore the literal biology of the word and come up with three primary areas that are needed to develop a powerful, healthy culture in your business.

Even if you are a one-man/woman firm, you are still building culture. Here is how you can begin thinking through it.

Most Small Business Owners dream of having a geographic footprint all over a certain geography because we assume that broader reach means broader influence and broader profits.

Of course it is not always true.

Are thinking about expanding your business across the street, across the State, across the Country, or across the Ocean? I sat down with two Small Business Owners who were discussing their experience with expansion and I documented the discussion narrowing it down to two primary take-a-ways.

I've never in my life heard of a Blind Used Car Salesman. That was one of the professions that Tanner Gers (pronounced Geeeeers) found himself after waking from a coma with a literal hole in his face.

Tanner makes this powerful statement as he began rebuilding his life, "I am not an anomaly,..I am not a unicorn."

Depression and anxiety are growing around the world among our teens and early twenties in part because they feel so out of place, or are at least perceived to be so out of place. Tanner gives us all an appropriate shot of truth and what it is genuinely like to "look" different, and how he has grown through the difference.

This is a powerful story of accountability, reality, challenge, and sheer grit!

So much of our modern product and service is becoming commoditized forcing Small Business Owners to create an experience that no machine can substitute.

The Minor League Baseball business is cut-throat. Most do not make it.

Enter Jesse Cole. Outfitted in a killer Yellow Tuxedo and tophat, a smile, and an enthusiasm that rarely runs out of gas, Jesse is a Promoter extraordinaire in the likes of great Boxing and Nascar promoters realizing that it is all about the fan experience.

Fan First Entertainment is a novel approach at business in a cut-throat, and low margin industry. Jesse not only promotes fans first, he also promote community gathering, mobilizing Millennials through conversation and engagement, and SIMPLICITY in an age of constant speed.

Be careful, if you are not smiling and learning, then you are about to!!!

History was made in the United States Presidential Campaign when the Trump campaign outperformed the Clinton campaign in winning the electoral college to ultimately upset the favorite.

Pundits are awash with perspective and special insight into what happened.

Why not offer a perspective that I have not heard yet?

The Mission Statement is an overlooked, undervalued tool in the bag of any small business owner and/or leader. In the Presidential Election, one side had a clear statement of purpose while the other side was a bit more fragmented.

Listen in to hear the reality of why we should Make The Mission Statement Great Again!

Small Business Owners usually began their business journey with intentions of freedom, exhilaration, ideas, and the best intentions.

A few months or years into the adventure reality begins to knock on the front door and introduce itself dressed up as accounts payables, marketing, customer feedback and service.

The Small Business Owner begins to think, "I started a business and feel like all I have now is a crummy job!"

The flow of markets, people, transactions, products, services, sales, and marketing may have predictable trends from a Macro (wide-angle) perspective, but from the stage small business is unpredictable and can feel chaotic.

The shots of chaos can mount up and lead to consistent drum beat of what I classify as "situational depression". It is not a clinical diagnosis necessarily but instead a line of voices in your head telling you that the end of times for your small business is just days/weeks/months away.

How do we as Small Business Owners work through it? I walk you through an inside perspective and truth that you can use to remind yourself of the reality of life that gives hope through the voices and the situations that seem so deflating.

I hope you will listen and implement!

He found that the tax code of the United States was too overwhelming for the common person to both read and understand. Believers have a responsibility to honor their commitment to National leadership, and taxes certainly are a representations of that.

You may have watched a recent political debate and thought, "what a show!"

All you need to do is drop by a cafe, a barber shop, or a collection of people and you are likely to hear some discussion around the election.

When things are so abstract and the candidates seem to have no interest but themselves in mind, we need a roadmap on how to vote in this election.

Here is a simple map you can use to make a serious political decision.
